Even if the final end of FM is always postponed for good reasons - one thing is certain: the future also belongs to digital broadcasting in demanding radio. And in addition to the satellite standard, there is a technology that is often underestimated: the terrestrial broadcasting of digital radio according to the DAB or DAB + standard.


A few words about DAB and DAB +

Digital radio according to the DAB standard was introduced in Germany in 1995. In 2011 the frequency ranges were expanded considerably with DAB +, so that today almost 30 stations can be received nationwide. There are also a number of local and regional channels. Current station lists are published on the digitalradio.de website. This page is a joint offer by ARD, Deutschlandradio, DRD Digitalradio Deutschland GmbH and Media Broadcast.

DAB and DAB + differ technically in terms of their coding methods. The RESTEK EDAB + tuner naturally supports all currently used DAB and DAB + transmission methods.

Compared to conventional FM transmission, the reception quality of digital radio is already possible with relatively small indoor antennas or even built-in antennas with stable quality. For stable reception of all generally receivable stations, an external antenna is also recommended for DAB and DAB +, as with FM. Basically, the reception is always crackle and noise free. In the event of poor reception options, reception does not deteriorate, but stops completely from a certain threshold.

The quality of the transmission depends heavily on the data width used by the transmitters. More and more demanding stations are now using bandwidths of 160 or even 192 kbps. Basically, however, all transmitted are compressed, and not lossless. Different meta-data are additionally transmitted, including information about the broadcaster, the program or even individual music tracks.


It depends on the tuner: also with digital radio

Numerous devices for mobile DAB + reception are currently on the market. The selection is not too big for hi-fi fans. RESTEK sets a lonely highlight with the EDAB + tuner.
